Dawe's Twineworks

The only surviving Victorian Twineworks with original working machinery.

Dawe’s was built around 1899 on the site of an earlier twineworks and it was run by the Dawe family until it closed in 1968.
By 2005, it was derelict and close to collapse. A compulsory purchase by South Somerset District Council made it possible for local people to form the charity, raise money and restore it to working order. We secured National Lottery Heritage funding in 2016 and after 50 years, we can now make twine once more.

Volunteers provide guided tours (or you can take our self-guided audio tour) and they run the engine and machinery. See how we make good use of a WW1 torpedo!

Children can make a length of twine – or even rope. The extensive archive of twine-making and local history records are open to view – and see the 50,000 litres of water beneath your feet!

• OPEN 10am to 4pm, 4th Saturday of each month, or by appointment. Groups welcome.
• Accessible facilities, with wheelchair/ disabled and partial disabled access, including parking, but some uneven ground.
