Langport
Overview
Langport, situated on the banks of the River Parrett in the heart of the Somerset Levels, is one of the smallest towns in England. It is surrounded by the parish of Huish Episcopi and rests in an area of beautiful rolling countryside that includes the communities of Curry Rivel, Aller, High and Low Ham, Drayton, Pitney, Hambridge, Westport and Muchelney, amongst others.
This ancient market town is noted for its distinctive houses on Bow Street and the 'hanging chapel' in the old town wall. Behind the Town Hall, the Walter Bagehot Town Garden has an extensive information board about the town's most famous resident, seats and picnic tables. The Battle of Langport in 1645 was one of the last battles of the first civil war. Stuckey's Bank, founded here, at one time had a bank note circulation second only to the Bank of England.
Langport has a wide range of popular cafes and shops for the practical to the local products made of willow and glass. There are horse-drawn tours with Steelsuffolks in the summer months and idyllic walking and cycling on the surrounding Somerset Levels. The 80km River Parrett Trail passes through the heart of Langport and if you’re not up to the full route, it’s handily divided up into sections so you can go at your pace, taking in the stunning views, lovely local riverside pit-stops, pubs and overnight stays of course.
Water activities are plentiful with canoes, kayaks and paddleboards all proving popular on the River Parrett. Fishing is of course popular too – just make sure you have the right permissions and licence. For a different and up close view of the extraordinary wildlife and nature on the levels, visitors can enjoy a delightful boat trip on the Duchess of Cocklemoor.
