Volunteers improve lake habitat

The volunteers and rangers at Yeovil Country Park have been busy clearing reeds from the lake at Ninesprings to improve the water quality. The reeds were planted approximately 10 years ago and have naturally spread in one corner of the lake. The reeds provide great habitat for nesting swans, moorhens and little grebes, but the density of the growth has reduced the flow of water between the pond, lake and the outflow into Dodham Brook. The volunteers and rangers have carefully cleared the reeds to encourage the waterfowl to nest away from the path whilst providing a clearer area for the water to flow. This will ensure that the water quality is improved as it will become less stagnant. Plenty of reeds have been left so that dragonflies, fish and other invertebrates can also benefit from the cover they provide.
